The maximum level

This article collects some information about the maximum level of Lake Constance.

Hourly average as a basis. First of all, it is important to understand that the maximum in the LUBW representations is based on hourly averages. And for this website we decided to take the same approach - even if it complicates things. In fact, two types of data are mixed in the graph. The maximum is determined based on hourly average values for each day. However, the daily average is used for the mean, the error band and the minimum. My guess is that they want to satisfy local perceptions here. When people say that the maximum during the flood in 1999 was 565cm, then in such an overview you don’t want to work with the daily average, which was lower.

It doesn’t matter much. But the daily average is just less than the peak.

Absolute high. The highest measured value for the period 1888 to 2023 is 576 cm, which was measured on September 3rd and 4th, 1890.

Contribution of the different years to the maximum. If you look at which years contributed to the maximum of the level, the distribution below results. With 35 days, the year 1999 dominates as the year that has the maximum level for the longest period, followed by 2021 with 33 days. It should be noted that the sum of the days here is more than 365. In fact, the table returns 376 days. This is because several years can share a maximum value.

1888, 1890, 1896, 1897, 1901, 1910, 1914, 1918, 1919, 1920, 1924, 1926, 1927, 1936, 1939, 1944, 1945, 1955, 1970, 1981, 198 2, 1987, 1988, 2001, 2002, 2018, 2021, 2023

Maximum per day

The table below shows the maximum level for each day of the year (mm_dd format). February 29th is excluded. The year or years in which this maximum was reached is also stated. The maximum at this point is also based on hourly average values.
